The genesis of Nayi Roshni can be traced back to a seemingly tiny incident of Mangala Nath’s visit to the Happy Home School for the Blind in Worli, Mumbai. A tiny spark that ignited at the time – virtually grew into a flame that has seen over 25 years of her dedicated service as a loving teacher and guide to the students of Happy Home.
Her passion for music and her love, dedication and commitment towards making life better for the visually challenged gave birth to Nayi Roshni. Years of interaction with the visually-challenged and many productive-hours together brought to light a growing need to provide them with a platform to effectively channelize their talents and present them to the world. Nayi Roshni was the coming together of great musical talent, of people with immense potential to excel in the musical field as instrumentalists and singers alike.
The very first show by Nayi Roshni at Khar Gymkhana was a huge success. The audience was moved by the stunning talent and the purity of voice and music had stirred their souls. This led to another show, again at Khar Gymkhana, on a much larger scale.
Thereafter Nayi Roshni has staged several musical shows. Their music has reached a large audience. Every show has been a stupendous success leading to the next, purely by word-of-mouth. And more importantly, each performance has contributed immensely to increasing the confidence of the visually-challenged singers and musicians in their own talent and ability.
The need for a parent body in the form of a Trust was felt after the success of Nayi Roshni. This led to the establishment Swaranaad.
